Sophia’s students have won awards in various competitions and festivals and have performed at such prestigious venues as Carnegie Weill Recital Hall, Merkin Hall, Tenry Cultural Institute, Steinway Hall and Watchung Arts Center.
Sophia Agranovich’s music education heritage is one of the most impressive today and stems from the great tradition of Western European, Russian and American schools. In Ukraine her teachers included Anna Stolarevich and renowned professor Alexander Edelman, peers of Vladimir Horowitz at the Kiev Conservatory in the class of Felix Blumenfeld.
Sophia has taught Piano Minor at the Juilliard School, and was on the faculty of the Town House International Music School in New York City. After graduating Juilliard with Bachelor and Master degrees, she took classes towards a Doctorate in Music Education at the Columbia University Teachers College, but deferred that pursuit to raise a family. Currently Ms. Agranovich is a member of various professional music organizations, Program Chair of Music Educators Association of New Jersey, board member of NJMTA affiliated with the Music Teachers National Association and is listed in the Private Teachers directory of the Juilliard School.
Ms. Agranovich uses individualized instruction methods, which combine traditional Russian school with various others, depending on the student's needs and abilities. She heavily concentrates on technique, which is a pre-requisite for freedom in expressivity. She teaches overall musicianship along with music theory, music history, sight reading and improvisation. She stresses the connection of music and other art forms, such as literature, painting and sculpture. This helps to achieve true style and balance in performing. Ms. Agranovich guides her students to develop their individuality, independence, and interpretations in conjunction with understanding of particular period in history and in composers’ lives when the music was written.
Sophia Agranovich is passionate, motivating, dedicated, patient, and helps students to appreciate and enjoy music in order to enrich their lives. She also incorporates into her teaching approach her studies and experience in psychology, kinesiology, music therapy, Yoga and meditation.
Sophia Agranovich's broad range of interdisciplinary studies has greatly enhanced both her performing and teaching, specifically by reducing physical strain and technique limitations, achieving refined states of concentration, focus and inspiration, integrating mind and emotions with music – after all – ‘music is a language of the soul’.
